Safety of children cycling to school – The Fender Cycle Scheme Case Study

Introduction

The Fender Cycle Scheme was established under the Local Sustainable Transport Fund to link the Durley Trading estate off Woodchurch road with the Beechwood and Noctorum housing estates.  The route also connects Prenton and Oxton residential estates with Upton Rail Station with train services to a key employment site at the Deeside Industrial Estate.  The scheme provides key improvements for pedestrians and cyclists forming a route alongside the River Fender to Upton Station. Previously, this was an informal route used by pedestrians and cyclists but was not a made path. As such the route was very narrow in sections and was overgrown and muddy in wet weather.
